The majority of the Foundation's activities in 2006 concentrated on education and health, as in previous years the target audience for these activities were children - the very foundation of our society.
Thanks to the free healthcare services offered by mobile healthcare units, a project initiated in 1997, the number of financially disadvantaged citizens benefiting from these services had exceeded 285,000 by the end of 2006. Furthermore, 22,608 of these services were performed in 2006.
On the education front, 6,000 computers were donated to 1,125 primary schools in 60 provinces within the scope of the “Let's Share and Get Together via IT” project executed in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education, Turkish State Railways, Microsoft and Youth for Habitat. These donations help to ensure that children living in these areas benefit from the advantages technology can bring to education.
In the cultural arena, a book entitled “Unforgettable Delicacies from Niğde” was printed, which compiled 100- year old folkloric dishes of Niğde, an Anatolian city in Turkey. A mixed media exhibition was held comprising the paintings, lithographs, ceramics and sculptures of members from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Additionally, within the scope of its social aid commitment to the underprivileged, food staples were presented to 1,500 families and clothing to 1,000 students, while 75,000 people were hosted at iftar dinners served throughout the month of Ramadan.
Further to the protocol signed with the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry relating to the the Ayhan Şahenk Foundation's reforestation of 175 hectares of forest burnt to ashes in Konacık, Bodrum in July 2003, the area's upkeep was also maintained by the Foundation in 2006. Due to its contributions and activities, the Ayhan Şahenk Foundation has been honored by various awards from numerous institutions.
